1. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
Ive learned alot being an intern here at Katz and Associates, I realized that knowing excell even a little bit plays a big part in working in an office. I also learned that checking your email constantly is also important. Ive learned alot about what the business world is like, i came into the office not even knowing what a public affairs firm was. I didnt know what to expect, but know ive gained an appreciation to what it means to be able to work in this environment.
2. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site?
Working as an intern here at Katz & Associates helped me understand a little bit more about what being an adult and working is all about. In High School you have responsibilities, and work, but you can choose what aspects to make a prioty and which you dont. When in a job you are kind of forced to mature and be responsible, organized and do your work, because your work affects the people around you. If you mess up it affects the company more than you, so you always have to make sure your work is your best.

Work vs. School
A typical workday at Katz and Associates is very different to a typical day at High Tech High International. For some reason working in Katz & Associates can make time run by real slow, although there are days were the day goes by suprisingly fast. There isnt really much time to interact at work and there just isnt many things you can do in a Job that you can do in school. For example falling asleep at your desk [ although that happen to me the first day at Katz & Associates after comming back from the real long High Speed Rail Meeting] just isn't right. There is also a lot more pressure on the work you are doing at work, because if you mess up it matters. Not like school where you can mess up and it'll just maybe hurt your grade. If you mess up in a job thats money lost and many other things, like clients and business. Although it did help that High Tech High International is a project based school because during my time here i noticed that it is much like school in that aspect. There is groups working on projects, and alot of the experience we gain from High Tech High International was very useful. Im quiet sure not many other kids have the opportunity to learn in that matter at a young age, so I am very appreciative towards that. What I have learned through my experience here at Katz and Associates is that work is much different from school, and once it is time to work, you must turn the switch in the back of your head to ON. Not only that but you must live your life to the fullest while your still young before you grow up and turn into a robot.

Reflection
Last week was actually my second full week at my internship, and went quiet smoothly. Although I did get to help out in preparing for a meeting Katz & Associates was in charge of planning. But other than that everything was quiet normal, just another day at the office. I got more time working on the media list, and gathered alot of information on the Award Matrix I need to finish by this Friday. I've actually had some akward moments working here, like when i would recieve a call from someone and they would transfer me. I would answer and not say anything and wait for them to say something. and they would be doing the same...-.-. For example Most people answer the phone by saying there name the organization and job position. But I would just not know what to say so I answer with a simple hello? I havent really had any funny moments in my internship, except for maybe a day where i accidently locked myself out of the office because i left and accidently locked the door.

Project Idea
The Project I will be working on for my internship consist of updating media contacts so that, once finished, can contact them and send them a release on the High Speed Rail Project Katz & Associates has been working on. I've Also had side projects where i would find information on potential awards that Katz & Associates can be eligible for. What I am most nervous about is, doing the presentation at the end infront of everyone that works here. I am nervous because they are all good at what they do, and unfortunately im still learning and i don't want to mess up. By helping out in these projects I am helping Katz & Associates with the projects they are involved in and getting them done.

1) What is a typical workday like?

Im an account executive, so i mainly work with client service, but im mainly focused on transportation clientel. But I also work with public affairs, management, things like that...
3) What is the purpose or mission of this organization/company?
Katz & Associates is a full service communication agency, specialized in serving public sector clients, so mainly government, and city clients
4) How is the organization structured?
Well, Sara Katz is the president/founder, she started this company i believe on 1988 by herself, then eventually started hiring people and now we have a office in, Sacramento, San Fransisco, Las Vegas.
5) Tell us about your path in getting to where you are today- what is your educational history and work experience to working here?
Well, I went to UCSD and graduated on 2000 to political science. My first job was in washington D.C. and i worked for a congressman for about 3 years, but then she went out of office so i came back to San Diego and worked in the chamber of congress for about 2 years and now ive been working here for about 3.
6) Why did you choose to work here?
Because it worked with public sector clients and that has alot to do with the government, cities, and it would make more sense to work here than one with private sector clients which are just organizations, etc.
7) What qualifications do employees need to be successful here and how are those qualifications acquired?
Well first you have to have a college degree, the best degrees to have would be like, public relations or communications. Getting degrees for those would teach you good writing skills which is good for a job like this. You also would want to be good at public speaking where you can go to a place called toastmaster where you could practice at. You would also need good project management skills which you kinda have to pick up on your own.
8) What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge are important here?
Well ive already kinda explained some of that, but what would be good for personality traits would be to be confident in interactions with clients, because if you come off as confident there going to be confident in you. Oh and also write down professional demeaner.
9) What advice do you have about working here?
I would say just dont be afraid to ask questions, its better to ask alot of questions and do it right, than be to afraid or embarressed to ask a question and do it wrong.

My Work Space
In my internship i have my own little bunker with my desk, computer, office supplies and phone. unfortunately for the time being the phone is missing a power cord -.-, although it should be fixed soon. Since recently ive had to make phone calls for contacts, i was able to use the conference room with the conference phone, which was a great experience. I alsio brought in my own box of peanuts which i think is really cool, and have my shelfs filled with snacks that help me concetrate better :P. I work in this desk from 9:oo till around 3:15 which is around how long i stayed at school. Everyone in the office has been really welcoming and have had a great experience so far. Everyone in the office is always dressed professionally except on casual fridays, which is pretty cool. Most of my time is spent in the office doing task assigned to me by either my mentor or other projects other people want me to help out on. Although there are days where I have gotten to a meeting, for example my 2nd day at my internship and the monday of the second week. Overall i think my internship is going pretty well although sometimes i get caught up playing to long on spider solitair. :P which i have improved my skills on, and could be very addicting. :P dont worry I only play when I am done, on lunch break, or when i am waiting for emails, etc.
